Competition Training for Surfers

Knowing how much time is left and which score you need changes the next wave you choose. Competition training in Prosurfingtools brings a countdown, live scores and priority into practice heats, so you can work on those decisions with your coach.

Set and manage priority

The coach sets the starting priority order. When a wave is registered in the app, that surfer moves to the back of the queue. The coach can adjust the order during the heat. Use it to practise deciding when to take a wave and when to wait.

Follow the heat as scores come in

Judges enter wave scores from the beach. The app updates each surfer’s two-wave total and position as the scores are recorded, giving the group a live view of the practice heat.

See the score needed to take the lead

The needs figure uses the leader’s total and the chasing surfer’s best wave to calculate a target score. It updates as the heat changes, helping the coach and surfer discuss which waves are worth taking.

Take the heat information into the water

Surfers using the connected watch app can see heat information and receive coach messages while they surf. The coach manages the session from a browser on the beach. Live updates need an internet connection.

A heat, rehearsed

Run a 20-minute heat with three surfers. The leader has 14.90. Your best wave is 7.50 and your other counting wave is 5.00, so you need 7.41 to move ahead. Use that target and the time remaining to choose your next wave. After the heat, review the ride with your coach and save the feedback with the wave.

Practise, then review the decisions

Return to the heat after the session to review scores, wave order and the coach’s notes. Use those examples to choose a focus for the next practice heat, such as starting earlier or being more selective with priority.

Frequently asked questions

Does priority change automatically?

The app moves a surfer to the back of the priority queue when their wave is registered. The coach sets the initial order and can adjust it. The app does not detect wave catches by itself.

How is the needs score calculated?

The app subtracts your best wave from the leader’s two-wave total and adds 0.01 to show the score needed to move ahead. It rounds the result to two decimal places. A value above 10 means one wave alone cannot put you ahead.

Who enters the scores?

The coach or assigned judges record the waves and scores from a phone, tablet or laptop. You can also practise with a training partner judging from the beach.

Can several surfers take part?

Yes. Add the surfers to the training and select who takes part in each heat. Each has their own wave record, scores and heat position.

Can I also run sessions without scores?

Yes. Choose Technical training for sessions focused on wave notes and feedback rather than competition scores.
